Salvaging your New Year's Resolution

Mental Edge Monday

Topic #41: Salvaging your New Year's Resolution

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! I hope all of you took some time to reflect on 2011 and to project into 2012.

In November, I shared my approach to New Year's Resolutions and I won't rehash it now.  I'm already sick of articles that trot out the same old "10 Ways to Make Your New Year's Resolutions stick". We've all heard most of them before.

I'd like to talk about how to salvage your resolutions when they aren't going as planned - and it's only Day 2. Since my modus operandi is to start planning early, I had lots of time to plot my takeover of the world in 2012. Well, the year is 2 days old and my plan is already crumbling.

Unfortunately, after suffering through plantar fasciitis for almost a year, and finally getting rid of it a few month's ago - it's creeping back. Similarly, after suffering through elbow tendinitis on the inside of my elbow ("golfer's" elbow) that kept me off the pull up bar for 7 months, and finally getting rid of it a few month's ago - it's making a comeback too. Brutal stuff I tell you.

How can my plot to conquer the world in 2012 ever come to fruition if I can't run or do pull ups? Bummer.

Well, in the past, I would have put my fancy, neat, and organized fitness plan for 2012 on hold until I got 100% healthy. Lord knows, if I'm not 100%, I may as well just wait around until I am. If I can't check-off all my 2012 resolutions with a bum foot and elbow, why even bother starting?

That's not happening this year. I'm moving on with my life and my foot and elbow will have to catch up. Doing otherwise would be a cop-out and a veiled form of procrastination. I won't have that this year. I've played that game one too many times already.

Keep Chopping

I have committed to surging on at 70% and hoping for the best. I'll work around my injuries and do what I can. I'll eat well despite not having the great workouts to support the nutrition. I'll have to make due - lest I forget my last blog post about my mantra for 2012 "consistency and moderation over intensity". It's time to eat my own dog food.

I can't afford to play "all-or-none" anymore. Life's too short and it's blowing by.

My hope is that I can maintain some semblance of fitness despite these physical setbacks so that when they eventually heal, I'll hit the ground running.

  • How are your resolutions coming along?
  • Any early roadblocks?
  • How are you staying consistent?

I wish all of you a prosperous and happy 2012.

Until next week, Keep the Edge.

Hey Phil... While I'm pretty certain that I wont be telling you anything you dont already know about physical fitness, I did want to share my own personal take on the tendinitis stuff. I to had elbow issues, golfers and tennis elbow tendinitis as well as knee issues. You know youre in bad shape when it is hard to sit on the toilet and clean yourself without elbow pain and your knee giving out! So what to do? After feeling sorry for myself for a few weeks and going through pull up bar withdrawal, I made a similar decision to forge on at 70% like you mentioned above. This is about the time I discovered kettlebells. I have to say, while I cant define all the specific science and the benefits of using them, I had great success in still exercising while simultaneously healing the other joint issues. With approx. 6 months of 80-90% of my workout routines based around kettlebell "stuff", I am now 99% pain free, can do push ups, pull ups and squat pain free (did "Murph" yesterday without issue!) and I dont feel like I missed out on anything over the last year being at "70%". Just my personal experience I wanted to share. Good luck to all in 2012 and keep the blog going! Take care and stay safe.

Hi, Gary. Thanks for that great info. I'm a relative newby with kettlebells, but have several that I use on-and-off. I think I'll give your plan a shot. I appreciate you looking out for me. Hopefully, I'll post a recovery message sooner rather than later. All the best.
